“Keeping Corgi Families Together”

The CAF is an annual resource available to Corgi owners whose Corgis have received medical/therapeutic treatment or behavioral training for serious medical/therapeutic or behavioral issues. Corgis must meet eligibility guidelines below.

The CAF has been set up to receive monies raised through donations during the year of the Corgi Walk. 

The CAF is an Oregon Nonprofit Corporation and is registered with the Oregon Department of Justice. Until the Fund is designated as a 501(c)(3) organization (application to be submitted), donations are not tax-deductible.

The CAF is available to full-breed and mixed-breed Cardigan and Pembroke Corgis, including rescue Corgis that are in permanent “forever” homes. A photograph of the Corgi must be submitted with the Application to verify eligibility.   

Corgis must have one or more of the medical/therapeutic or behavioral issues that are covered by the CAF funds (see Eligible Expenses). A veterinarian, veterinary specialist, or a certified behavior trainer must identify both the diagnosis and the treatment on the receipt for services.

Corgis currently being fostered. Corgis in pet hospice (palliative care) and suffering from a terminal illness with less than six months to live.

The Corgi owner must be of legal age (18 years old or older).  

The Corgi owner must have owned the Corgi for at least six months. Exceptions may be made if the Corgi is a recent rescue.   

The Corgi owner must have applied for and used other sources of funding (e.g., grants, pet insurance, personal resources) for treatment or services prior to applying to the CAF. This information is required on the Application Form.  

The CAF has restrictions on what expenses are covered. This enables the CAF to stay within its available resources. In consultation with veterinarians, veterinary specialists, and certified behavioral trainers, only specific medical/therapeutic and specific behavioral training expenses are covered.  Reimbursement is available only for conditions identified as covered in the two categories: medical/therapeutic treatment and behavioral training.

• Behavioral issue with underlying medical origin (e.g., urine marking from urinary tract/bladder infection) 
• Rehabilitation therapies (acupuncture, chiropractic, hydrotherapy, physical therapy)
• Treatment from specialists (neurology, dermatology, oncology, ophthalmology, internal medicine, diagnostic imaging, rehabilitation) 

Not Covered   

• Wellness exams 
• Vaccinations 
• Flea/heartworm prevention 
• Health screens 
• Dental cleaning 
• Therapeutic pet food 
• Grooming 
• Herbal therapy 
• Veterinary supplements (e.g., probiotics) 
• Spaying/Neutering 
• Microchipping

Covered  

Training to correct the following behavior issues:  

• Reactivity 
• Separation/Home alone anxiety 
• Out-of-control barking 
• Hyperexcitability 
• Aggressive behavior toward people or animals 
• Obsessive-Compulsive behaviors 
• Unruly behavior 
• Noise phobias 
• Leash walking (including pulling, lunging, jumping up)

Not Covered   

• Eating issues 
• House soiling 
• Urine marking 
• Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome 
• Puppy behaviors (e.g., nipping, leash walking, house soiling, urination, digging, frapping [frantic rapid active playing], chasing clothing, etc.)

Money raised from sponsorships and donations will provide resources for the Corgi Assistance Fund.

Treatment of services must have occurred during the year of the current Corgi Walk.

The money raised from sponsorships and donations in 2024 will be distributed between medical/therapeutic treatment and behavioral training as follows:    

• Sixty-five percent (65%) of total raised to medical/therapeutic treatment 
• Thirty-five percent (35%) of total raised to behavioral training

The Fund will provide limited financial reimbursement to Corgi owners based on a cap for medical/therapeutic treatment and for behavioral training. To ensure that as many Corgis as possible are helped, the CAF is designed to supplement the amount owners have paid for the treatment/training and what owners have received from other sources.    

Corgi owners may apply only once during a funding year and be reimbursed for an amount up to the designated cap in a single category.

A total of $5,162.91 was available in January 2024 to Corgi owners whose Corgi received medical/therapeutic treatment or behavioral training. The distribution is:

• $3,355.89 to medical/therapeutic with a cap of $420 per Corgi 
• $1,807.02 to behavioral training with a cap of $225 per Corgi

Applying for financial help from the CAF is a simple process. To ensure that the CAF is using its resources for the most good, the CAF has established procedures for applying, reviewing applications, making payments, and following up after the grant has been made.

The application form may be completed online and submitted with the required documents as e-mail attachments. Alternatively, the Application Form may be completed offline and mailed to the address on the Form. All information on the Application Form will be kept private and confidential and not shared or made public without an applicant’s permission.  Anonymous data may be compiled and used publicly to report on the CAF’s work and accomplishments.

All background information must be included so the CAF has a method for contacting you.

Additionally, all information on the Form applicable to your Corgi must be included. For example, if your Corgi had surgery for an illness or injury, the treating veterinarian must be identified, the veterinarian’s address and phone number must be included, the diagnosis and treatment must be included, the date of treatment must be stated, and the cost of the treatment must be included.  In addition, you must include the paid receipt with all of the required information stated on the Form, and you must submit a recent photo of your Corgi. You also must sign the Form, verifying the truthfulness of what you are submitting.

The condition or issue for which you are applying for reimbursement must have occurred during the year of the current Walk . The medical condition or behavioral issue and treatment may be ongoing but reimbursement may only be for the treatment or training during a current funding cycle. For example, if your Corgi had Canine Glaucoma and initial therapeutics and massage a previous year were not effective and the Corgi had glaucoma surgery during the funding cycle, the final treatment would be submitted. 

Post-dated treatment or training will not be considered.

A note about Disc Diseases: At this time, there is no cure for DM or IVDD, nor is there a universally agreed on treatment for dogs with DM or IVDD. However, there are therapeutic interventions that can sustain the life of the Corgi with DM or IVDD and these are covered.

The CAF will review each application carefully and, if there are questions, will contact you or call the veterinarian or trainer for clarification. The CAF also has a team of veterinarians available to review applications, as needed.

The CAF will reimburse treatment/training costs on a first-come, first-served basis, in the areas the Fund covers. The CAF is only available for post-treatment reimbursement. Applicants may receive reimbursement only once during the funding cycle in either medical/therapeutic or behavioral training.

The CAF will not reimburse the entire cost of treatment or training for the Corgi unless the amount falls within the designated cap for medical/therapeutic treatment or behavioral training. The CAF will notify applicants if the Fund has been exhausted in a specific area.

After the CAF has reviewed your application for completeness and has determined that it falls within the covered medical/therapeutic treatment or behavioral training, you will be sent a certified check made out to the Corgi owner whose name is on the invoice or receipt. 

The CAF would like to know how your Corgi is doing after it has received treatment or training with the help of reimbursement from the Fund. With your permission, the CAF would like to post a photo (with no personal information) along with a short statement from you about your Corgi’s life post treatment or training.
